Japanese Turquoise-Glazed Shishi Figure – Meiji Period

An attractive Japanese turquoise-glazed model of a Shishi, dating from the Meiji period. Expertly modelled in a dynamic protective stance, the Shishi is shown with raised tail and lowered front haunches, its head subtly tilted and ears flattened in a fierce grimacing expression traditionally intended to ward off evil spirits.

The figure is finely detailed throughout and finished in a vibrant crazed turquoise glaze, softly thinning at the extremities to highlight the sculptural form. A striking decorative piece with strong character and presence.

Dimensions:
19 cm long × 20 cm high × 11 cm wide.

Condition:
Overall good condition with a small re-stuck chip to the front paw and a couple of professionally restored chips to the extremities.

A highly decorative and appealing example of Meiji-period Japanese ceramics.

Price: £295.00, inclusive of UK shipping.
