Japanese Satsuma vase by Hosai, dating Meiji period

An attractive globular Satsuma vase by Hosai, dating late 19th century. It is decorated with three family crests, the Paulownia of the Toyotomi clan, the Hollyhock leaves of the Tokugawa shoguns, and the cross of the Shimazu clan who ruled over Satsuma, Ōsumi and Hyūga.
The base signed in gold ‘Satsuma Hosai’ along with a Shimazu mon in white enamel. Hosai worked towards the end of the 19th century and his work can be found in the NSW Museum Australia.
This type of Satsuma pottery painted in thick enamels, particularly gosu, a thick dark blue, has assumed the name ‘Imperial Satsuma’ though there is no history of it being made specifically for and for sole use by the Shimazu clan.
Size approx. 17.3 cm high and 11cm diameter. Excellent original undamaged condition.
